Connectivity, or: thoughts at 3am

There is no reason a computer can’t be conscious: tonight I am a broken electrical machine. We don’t often feel it, but once in a while, perhaps in the early hours of the morning, when shifting back and forth between sleep and waking, we may catch a wire misfire. Perhaps a sudden flash of light in the back of one’s eyes against the dark night. Perhaps a twitch in the eyelid, a flutter in the heart. We function through electrical connections, and sooner or later, in every one of us, a small glitch. So next time, feel some sympathy even for your thermostat: it tries so very hard. And if forced to restart your broken computer, press the off button gently. Sometimes, a little sleep can soothe a misfiring brain.
